Introduction of Solid Foods and Cups

When will my baby eat solid foods?
Children with cleft lip and/or palate can follow the usual solid food timeline, which starts around 6 months of age. This is typically when infants have good head, neck, and trunk control and are showing interest in foods. Having a cleft palate is not a reason to delay or avoid introducing solid foods.

You may consider starting with slightly thicker purees and offering smaller spoonfuls, which might be easier for your baby to manage. As your baby grows, they should be able to begin eating chewable foods as well when they are showing signs of developmental readiness. It is normal to feel nervous when starting these new experiences, so please do not hesitate to reach out to your team for guidance and support as you and your baby navigate these important stages of feeding development.

Additionally, if your baby has had, or is preparing for surgery, there may be temporary feeding restrictions. Be sure to discuss with your care team how to maintain nutrition and make mealtimes enjoyable during recovery.

When will my baby drink from a cup?
The introduction of a cup to support the transition from the bottle can typically begin along the usual developmental timeframe of 6 months of age, which also coincides with the introduction of solid foods. Teams often have specific recommendations regarding the type of drinking methods recommended prior to and after palate surgery, so please discuss this with your team prior to starting.

Which cup should I choose?
It’s best to use an open or free-flowing cup as many early sip and straw cups require suction, which can be difficult for an infant with a cleft palate. Teams often can provide guidance on the type of cup they recommend, so please ask your team for advice about what would be best for your child. Cups and straws that require suction can often be introduced after cleft palate surgery once cleared by your surgeon.
