Genetic Testing in the Craniofacial Clinic Made Simple

Date/Time: Wednesday, October 23rd at 3:00 – 4:00 pm ET

Speakers:
Scott Hickey, MD
Betsy Schmalz, MS, CGC
Bianca Zapanta, DO

Description: Explore the critical role of genetic testing in diagnosing and managing genetic syndromes associated with orofacial clefting, craniosynostosis, and other congenital anomalies. Case studies and discussion on the use of microarray and DNA sequencing will be featured, helping you understand the differences between these genetic testing methods. You’ll learn how to select the appropriate genetic tests, navigate the roles of geneticists and genetic counselors, and manage the logistical challenges of ordering genetic tests. Learners will be equipped to explain complex genetic concepts to patients and families, distinguish between the responsibilities of a geneticist and a genetic counselor, and implement strategies to facilitate timely and accurate genetic testing, thereby enhancing patient outcomes through early and effective genetic testing.

Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the differences between copy number testing and sequencing in a patient/parent-friendly manner, ensuring that learners can communicate these concepts clearly to their patients/families.
  • Contrast the distinct roles of a geneticist and a genetic counselor, in order to effectively determine when to consult each professional in clinical practice.
  • Describe how to facilitate the safe and accurate ordering of genetic tests, ensuring that patients receive appropriate and timely genetic testing.

Learning Outcomes:
At the completion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Self-assess a gain in knowledge related to genetic testing in diagnosing genetic syndromes associated with orofacial clefting, craniosynostosis, and other congenital anomalies.
  • Self-assess that they will improve their performance in their clinical practice in diagnosing genetic syndromes based on knowledge gained by attending this learning activity.
  • Self-assess that they will be able to apply knowledge gained regarding the diagnosis of genetic syndromes, which will improve patient outcomes.
