Challenging Conversations with Patients as Part of Craniofacial Team Care

Description: Children with craniofacial diagnoses often experience psychosocial challenges that can impact their overall health and treatment outcomes. This webinar will provide practical strategies for all craniofacial team members to engage in supportive conversations with patients about sensitive topics such as depression, anxiety, self-injury, school advocacy, surgical decision-making, treatment disappointment, and social concerns. Participants will learn evidence-based communication techniques, including simple scripts and role-play examples, to help address these issues effectively, even in settings where psychosocial providers are not readily available.

Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Identify three common psychosocial challenges that patients with craniofacial diagnoses may present with during team care.
  • Apply at least two sample scripts to facilitate discussion of sensitive topics with patients.
  • List three national resources available to support patients experiencing psychosocial challenges.

Learning Outcomes:
At the completion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Self-assess a gain in knowledge related to strategies for addressing challenging conversations with patients in craniofacial team care.
  • Self-assess that they will improve their performance in their clinical practice based on knowledge gained.
  • Self-assess that they anticipate improved patient outcomes based on changes in their performance.
