September 23, 2025 – Cleft lip and/or palate is one of the most common birth differences in the United States, and in the world. While researchers in our field continue to seek scientific data on the etiology (cause) and genetics of cleft and craniofacial conditions, we know from evidence-based science that taking folic acid during pregnancy reduces the chance of a child being born with a craniofacial difference; however, it does not guarantee any specific outcome. Many factors contribute to birth differences.
The American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association (ACPA) strongly encourages each family to work with their board-certified healthcare professional such as a physician or dentist to best support the health of a parent and child. Each family should receive evidence-based advice on the use of folic acid-related supplements, as well as the use of medications such as acetaminophen after medical or dental procedures to manage pain.
